From There Be Hodags, by C.A. McAllister:

With the rise of the Internet, Wisconsin’s little people legends have branched out online, with many hikers in Wisconsin reporting encounters with little men under the name of “dwendi,” likely deriving from the term “duende,” a term for a type of Hispanic little people that has evolved online to become a general catch-all term for little people legends worldwide.

These modern dwendi sightings describe them as standing between two and four feet tall, with long ears and noses, typically wearing earth tone, hand-stitched clothing, and using only the most rudimentary of tools. They are able to stealthily disappear between the trees. Sometimes they remain unseen, and only their high-pitched laughter and chattering noises can be heard from the surrounding trees. Their small footprints are sometimes observed and reported, in a manner similar to the large footprints found and attributed to bigfoot.

The dwendi are commonly observed engaging in ritualistic behaviors. One encounter in 1998 reported near Eagle River sighted dwendi darting between the trees near a circle of oddly shaped stones, apparently constructed by the little men. Another encounter in Kettle Moraine, 2004, witnessed the dwendi holding sticks and dancing around a miniature campfire.

From "Top 5 Cryptids of Wisconsin," by the Midnight Sentry (Transcript):

Wisconsin, a Midwestern State known for its for its dairy industry and natural beauty is also a fertile ground for legends, myths and folklore. From stories of hodags to wendigos, Wisconsin seems to be a home to the uncanny and the mysterious. One of the lesser-known but increasingly interesting cryptids that have caught the attention of both locals and researchers alike is the dwendi.

The term dwendi is said to have been derived from various linguistic roots, some attributing it to indigenous languages, while others have pointed towards a blend of European terminologies. In essence, "dwendi" is generally thought to refer to small, humanoid creatures resembling dwarves or gnomes.

The origins of the dwendi are clouded in mystery, with some locals attributing their existence to indigenous mythologies, and others suggesting that the lore might have been recorded by early European settlers. Eyewitness accounts often describe the dwendi as standing between 2 to 4 feet tall with distinctive facial features such as elongated ears and noses. The beings are sometimes reported as having a somewhat gnomish appearance, often dressed in earthtone clothing that appears hand stitched. Some accounts also describe them carrying rudimentary tools or artifacts.

One of the most famous encounters dates back to the early 20th century when a lumberjack reportedly came across a dwendi in a remote forested area. According to the account The Lumberjack watched as the dendy engaged in some sort of ritual before disappearing into the woods.

Similarly many hikers and outdoor enthusiasts have claimed to have seen dwendi while exploring the wilderness areas of Wisconsin. In the digital age the internet has become a repository for personal testimonials about encounters with the dwendi. Websites, forums, and social media platforms dedicated to cryptids frequently feature posts from individuals claiming to have seen or interacted with these elusive beings. While these reports are not scientifically verified they provide a plethora of collective experience that fuels the intrigue surrounding the dwendi.

Here are a couple notable reports:

In 1998 a group of hikers near Eagle River claimed to have encountered dwendi while they were exploring a less traveled trail. According to the hikers they stumbled upon a circle of oddly shaped stones and felt an immediate sense of dread. Shortly thereafter they reported seeing small humanoid figures darting between the trees. These creatures appeared to be about 2 to 3 ft tall with exaggerated facial features. The hikers quickly left the area and later discovered small footprints around their campsite. They reported their experiences to local authorities who chocked it up to local lore and did not investigate further.

In 2004 another report came from a camper in Kettle Marine State Forest. The individual claimed to have heard high-pitched laughter and chattering noises late at night. Intrigued, the camper used a flashlight to investigate and reported seeing several small creatures congregating near a creek. These beings appeared to be engrossed in some sort of ritual, holding sticks and dancing around a small fire. The camper was too frightened to approach and quickly retreated to his campsite. The next day, upon investigating the same spot, he found an array of small Footprints in what appeared to be the remnants of a tiny fire. Local Rangers were notified but dismissed the claim attributing it to wildlife and imagination

The dwendi has found a place in the folk tales and legends of local communities. Often they are portrayed as either benevolent or neutral beings that live in harmony with nature. Stories tell of them offering guidance to Lost Travelers or even helping with small tasks around the household. The scientific community largely regards the dwendi as a part of local folklore rather than a biological
entity. Critics often attribute dwendi sightings to the misidentification of other animals or even inanimate objects like tree stumps. However, given the consistent nature of eyewitness reports and the rich cultural history surrounding the dwendi, many believe that dismissing these accounts outright may be premature.

Some theories propose that the dwendi might be a yet to beis discovered species adapted to the Wisconsin ecosystem. They may employ effective camouflage techniques that make them difficult to spot, hence their elusive nature. On the more speculative side there are those who argue that dwendis could be interdimensional beings or even supernatural entities. While these theories are not grounded in empirical evidence they add an intriguing dimension to the dwendi narrative.

The dwendi of Wisconsin remains an enigmatic and elusive figure that captures the imagination of locals and cryptid enthusiasts alike. While scientific evidence for its existence remains elusive, the persistence of eyewitness accounts and its presence in cultural stories adds a layer of complex ity to its tale.

As with many cryptids the dwendi serves as a symbol of the unamed and mysterious aspects of the world around us, reminding us that there may still be undiscovered wonders lurking in the unexplored corners of our reality. Whether fact or fiction, the dwendi will likely continue to be a topic of fascination and debate for years to come.
